On the 18th of May 2015 we presented our research within the scope of the Fascination of Plants Day 2015. Students, scientists and guests were invited according to the motto "The fascinating world of nightshades" to learn more about the ongoing research and gaining insight into the world of nightshade plants. Beside the well-known representatives tomato, potato or tobacco there were a lot more species to investiage for the visitors like cape gooseberry or the blue colored Mexican tomatillo.
Alongside the use as food and animal feed, Solanaceous plants have a high potential in production of novel pharmaceuticals or bioactive compounds.
In addition to the open day in our greenhouse, visitors could perform experiments like DNA extraction from tomato, pectin extraction or manual genome assembly and thus get directly in touch with Solanaceae-based plant research. Interested attendants were able to get in contact with PhD students, Postdocs and Prof. Usadel to discuss research, education and career options.
