On 19 November 2025, the library building of HHU hosted the Oxford Nanopore Technologies Plant Day. The event was co-organized by our Institute of Biological Data Science together with Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT). A central message of the day was clear: ONT sequencing is rapidly becoming a transformative force in plant research, from pangenomes to breeding and biodiversity studies. Our institute is proud to be at the forefront of this development.
Prof. Björn Usadel opened the session, setting the stage for a series of excellent talks by our group members Vivien Josten-Rosenthal, Lucas Munnes, and Dr. Jan Piotr Buchmann. Their contributions showcased how our research is helping drive advancements of ONT technologies in plant genomics. We also welcomed our collaborator Dr. Luciana Gaccione from Prof Barchi’s lab at the University of Turin. This work has been recently published in Nature Communications, and stands as an inspiring example of the international partnerships strengthening this field.
The day was a great success and highlighted our institute’s leading role in pushing plant sequencing forward with cutting-edge ONT technologies.
